Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin
Botox is the name commonly used for injections of botulinum toxin, however this is name of one of the brands, and there are many other brands on the market.

How does botox work?
Botulinum toxin paralyses muscles temporarily, usually for around three months. With the muscles paralysed the overlying dynamic wrinkles should improve and result in a more youthful appearance.

Will all my wrinkles go?
There are more than one type of wrinkle and not all will disappear following botox injections:
  - dynamic wrinkles: these are wrinkles that form when the skin overlying a muscle develop as the skin is folded when the muscle moves
  - static wrinkles: these wrinkles will remain even after botox injections. These are more suitable for filler injections to smooth them out.
  - fine wrinkles: much finer than dynamic wrinkles, these are superficial wrinkles in the very top layers of the skin. They can improved by moisturisers or chemical peels.

Is it painful?
The very finest needles are used to inject botox, which absolutely minimises any discomfort. Other techniques to further eliminate any discomfort can be used.
